WELCOME
TO LOVATON FARM
Traditionally Reared Quality Meats
It
started 10 years ago, when a promiscuous pig called Penny caught the eye
of Rufus the randy boar. Today, Lovaton Farm produces and supplies free-range
meat from Mid-Devon’s rolling pastures to dinner tables across the
country.
Today,
Lovaton Farm’s free range pork, lamb and Dexter beef
is available by mail order, directly from the farm and in
selected
local
shops
in the Okehampton area.
Lovaton
is a family-run farm with an in-house butchery, ensuring
high quality and complete
traceability
from our fields to your fork.
When
Jane Barber took over the farm from her father in 1999,
it was her intention to renovate the farmhouse to start
a B&B business. Jane’s first purchase was a
Gloucester Old Spot named Penny to clear the paddock
of brambles and weeds. However, Penny caught the roving
eye of Rufus the boar and in less than 12 months they
produced no fewer than 42 piglets.

Pork
Our
Pork is produced from the finest of traditional rare-breed
pigs including the Gloucester Old Spot, Saddleback
and Welsh pigs, the Gloucester Old Spot being
the original 'orchard pig'.
All
our pigs are genuinely free-range and are reared slowly
to maturity. The pigs spend their whole lives roaming
freely in open paddocks during the spring, summer
and autumn with cosy straw-bedded sheds in winter.
This
stress-free rearing results in delicious, succulent
and mouth-watering pork with proper 'crackling'. Pork
is available in great value meat boxes or
cut to order
into joints, chops, bacon, gammon hams,
pork burgers and award winning sausages and meatballs.
(Taste of the West Silver 2008). We can also supply half-pig
orders.

Beef
Our home-bred Dexter and Dexter cross Devon
cattle graze all spring, summer and autumn on land under
'Countryside
Stewardship', a scheme to promote wildlife friendly farming.
In the winter the cattle are supplemented with home-grown
feeds allowing them to be reared in a stress-free traditional
manner.
The Dexter is the smallest of the native British breeds
with a wonderfully distinctive texture and flavour. We
cross this with the Devon Ruby Red breed which produces
the same rich Dexter taste and has subsequently won us
Gold and Silver awards in the annual 'Taste
of the West' competition.
All the beef is hung for three to four weeks to enhance
the flavour and tenderness. It is then cut and vacuum
packed ready to use or freeze, making it ideal for modern
busy families. Beef is available in great value meat boxes
or
cut to order
into all types of joints, succulent steaks,
lean mince,
burgers
and sausages.

Lamb,
Hogget and Mutton
Our
Lamb is sourced from our native breeds which are lambed
outside in the spring sunshine. Reared on clover rich pasture
overlooking Dartmoor, the meat is tender and full of
flavour.
In addition to Lamb, we also supply older animals as Hogget
and Mutton. This meat has even more flavour and
is a
traditional
good-value meat which is making a welcome comeback.
The Lamb, Hogget and Mutton are all available as joints,
chops, steaks, mince and sausages. For the best value try
our half or whole lamb boxes.
